Data sources and methodology

Everything on this site comes from two public sources: the Estonian e-Business Register and the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. This page lists each file, what is read from it, what is calculated, and what is left out.

Sources: RIK open data downloads andEMTA statistics and open data. File names carry a date that changes with each release, so the download script reads the current links from the publishers' pages on every run. Each file's size and hash are recorded in the site's repository with the download time.
Line items read from the annual reports
Cash, current assets, non-current assets, total assets, current liabilities, non-current liabilities, equity, revenue, employee expense, depreciation, operating profit, profit before tax, net profit and the average number of employees in full-time equivalents. No other line of a report is read, and the text parts of the reports are not read at all.
Licences
e-Business Register data. The Estonian download page names the licence CC BY-SA 4.0, and the footer of the English portal names CC BY 4.0. Until RIK confirms which applies, this site follows the stricter one: it credits the source, states that the data was modified, and publishes the derived data underCC BY-SA 4.0.
EMTA data. The board publishes the files as open data without naming a licence. The site uses only the rows of legal persons and always names the board as the source.
Which companies are published
Left out entirely
- Sole proprietors (füüsilisest isikust ettevõtja, FIE), in the register data and in the tax data.
- Companies not entered in the register as active: in liquidation, bankrupt or deleted.
- Partnerships (TÜ, UÜ) whose name looks like a person's name, meaning it shows no legal form marker and no business word.
- Any company on the removal list. A company can ask to be removed at any time.
Never read from the sources
Board members and other persons on the register card, shareholders, beneficial owners, contact details, the text of representation rights, resolutions, commercial pledges and the text of annual reports. The register's separate files for persons, owners, beneficial owners, register cards, pledges and orders are not downloaded. The general-data file has to be downloaded because it holds the activity code. It also holds contact details and address history. The pipeline reads the four activity fields from it, writes them to a small file and deletes the unpacked file.
Addresses
A registered office can be a private home. The full street address is shown only for a public limited company (AS) and for companies whose latest report or tax data shows at least 10 employees. Every other page shows the county and the settlement only.
Which companies get a page
The register holds far more companies than the site can present with useful data. A company is a candidate when it is entered as active, is not excluded above, and has a 2024 or a 2025 annual report with revenue and total assets above zero. Each candidate receives a score between 0 and 1:
score = 0.50 × pct(revenue) + 0.25 × pct(employees) + 0.15 × pct(taxes paid, last four quarters) + 0.10 × pct(age)
Here pct is the percentile rank of the company among all candidates, revenue and employees come from the latest of the two reports, and age is the time since first registration. The best 15,000 candidates form the pool, with two adjustments that keep the pool broad: each county and each two-digit EMTAK division contributes at least 20 companies if that many are candidates, and every candidate that is an AS is included.
Pages are published from the top of this pool in stages. The current stage publishes up to3,000 companies, and 3,000 have a page today. A company also needs enough data for a page: either two report years with revenue and assets, or one report year and two quarters of tax data. The score decides which companies are shown first. It is not a quality rating and says nothing about how well a company is run.

Rankings cover published companies only. A company that is not published cannot appear in them, so a ranking is a ranking of this site's companies and not of the whole country. Amounts are in euros as filed. Compact forms such as €12.4M are rounded, and tables show exact amounts.
Timeliness and errors
Every company page shows the date the data was downloaded. The data can change at the source after that. If a figure on a page differs from the official record, the official record is right. To report a difference, use the contact form and choose "Data correction". If the source itself is wrong, the correction has to be made with the register or the tax board.
