How to look up a company in Estonia

Every company in Estonia has a registry code and a record in the e-Business Register. This guide shows how to find that record from a name, a registry code or a VAT number, and how to check what you find.

The three identifiers

Name. The registered name includes the legal form, and the form can stand at either end. The same kind of company appears as Osaühing Peedu Audit,OÜ Kuusekoda or Laiju OÜ. Estonian names use the letters õ, ä, ö, ü, š and ž. Names also change, so a name alone is the weakest identifier.

Registry code (registrikood). An eight-digit number that the register assigns when the company is entered. It stays the same when the company changes its name. Company page addresses on this site start with the registry code for that reason: a name can change, the code does not.

VAT number (KMKR). The letters EE followed by nine digits, for example EE100723135. Only companies registered for VAT have one, so a company can be real and active without a VAT number. The number is different from the registry code.

Searching on this site

Type into the search box at the top of any page. If the first character is a digit, the search treats the input as a registry code and matches on the start of the code. Otherwise it treats the input as a name and matches on the start of the name. Diacritics are ignored, soJõgeva and Jogeva find the same names, and capital letters do not matter.

Matching on the start of the name has a practical consequence. If the name begins with the legal form, search for Osaühing or OÜ first, then narrow. If you do not find a company under one spelling, try the other position of the legal form. When you know the registry code, use it: it returns one company.

The other way in is browsing. There are pages for each of the 15 counties that have published companies, for each legal form, and for rankings by revenue, headcount, tax paid and growth. Start at companies by county orrankings.

What a company page shows

• The registry code, with a link to the official record for the same company.
• The legal form in English, with the Estonian name next to it.
• The VAT number, if the company has one.
• The status. Only companies entered in the register as active are published.
• The county and settlement of the registered office.
• The main activity, with its EMTAK code. The EMTAK guide explains the code.
• Annual report figures for every year available since 2019, and quarterly tax and turnover figures from the Estonian Tax and Customs Board (EMTA).

Every figure carries its period. The page also shows the date the data was downloaded, in the source box at the bottom.

Check the result against the official register

This site republishes open data. It is not the register, and it does not replace an extract from it. The e-Business Register at ariregister.rik.ee, run by the Centre of Registers and Information Systems (RIK), holds the legal record. Use it when a decision depends on the exact wording of the record, for example who may represent the company.

To verify a VAT number, the European Commission runs theVIES service. It confirms whether an EU VAT number is valid, which is useful before invoicing a company in another member state without VAT.

If the company is not here

The site currently publishes 3,000 companies. That is a selection from the register, not the register. A company is missing for one of these reasons.

• It is a sole proprietor (FIE, füüsilisest isikust ettevõtja). These are not legal persons, and their records belong to a person. They are not published.
• It is no longer entered in the register as active.
• It has no 2024 or 2025 annual report with revenue and assets above zero.
• It has not yet been added. Companies are selected by a score and added in stages. The methodology page lists the rules.

In each of these cases the official register still has the company. A company that asked to be removed is also missing. The contact form takes such requests, and they need no reason.

Companies owned by e-residents

A company founded through the e-Residency programme is an ordinary Estonian company. It has a registry code, an entry in the register and a legal form, most often an OÜ. It appears on this site the same way as any other company, and the site does not mark it. The site does not show who the owners are.

A short procedure

1. Search by registry code if you have it, otherwise by name, trying both positions of the legal form.
2. Compare the registry code and the county with what your counterparty gave you.
3. Read the status and the legal form.
4. Read the financial trend. Check that the latest report year is recent.
5. Open the official record through the registry code link, and check the VAT number in VIES.
